Planning && Research

Before I start to think about the title sequences, there are a number of factors that I need to take into considerations. like for example the genre of the film. Before choosing my genre i went onto artofthetitle.com and I looked at different genres of title sequences. for example : cartoons (The Incredibles), Comedy (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World), Drama (Catch Me If You Can & To Kill A Mockingbird), Casino Royale, Sherlock Holmes, Se7en and Reservoir Dogs. After looking at all of these I still wasn't sure about that kind of genre to pick. However Catch Me If You Can and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The world really stood out to me I enjoyed the graphics but I wasn't completely confident that I would be able to produce graphics up to that kind of standard.

So I then took my research to youtube.com and I found Kill Bill. A film released in October 2003 starring Uma Thurman and Lucy Lui. Its budget was $30 million and it grossed $180million worldwide. It was the opening scene not the opening sequence that gave me the idea out our title sequence. It was concise, engaging and left the audience wanting more. This is exactly the kind of effect that I wanted my audience to feel. After watching this a lot of factors came into consideration.

Finally I decided to do a horror genre. Firstly I consulted with my group and they too agreed. We choose it because firstly there would be no confusion with the audience about what kind of film they are watching and also because horror films follow certain conventions i.e. low key lighting and mysterious music.
I decided to look at different title sequences to get a general flare for what i need to include within my title sequence.

When looking at horror films title sequences the first one i came across was ______ (in a car). After watching a series of film sequences i.e. Drag Me To Hell, Halloween and House Of Wax . I realised that there are certain conventions that horror film follow so that the audience know that it is a horror film. Conventions such as contemporary settings (Big Run down houses in the middles of no-where). There is always a notation of terror and dread which comes from the person/monster or the unknown. The makes the audience question themselves and their surroundings which is a really good technique for engaging the audience. Not all films have no key lighting however it was included in some films and i feel it works really well with the film, for example in Halloween because of the low key lighting you never always got to see his whole face until the end of the film and this added to the suspense. There are certain core themes that horror films follow such as good vs. evil. which is very important. Because everybody in the world has grown up with the theme of good always triumphing over evil. Also because it is a horror films gruesome things have to occur which is usually destruction of bodies. Because we are now in modern times killing someone isn't enough the way in manner the person does it has to be unconventional. Maybe a particular weapon the person uses like a chainsaw or an axe.
These are the things that I want to try and incorporate within my title sequence.

We have now chosen our storyline. A man had a child with a women, the man was unstable and and not totally insane. He loved the women but the feelings weren't mutual and eventually he had a mental breakdown and was taken away in care. For the 20 years that he was there he plotted his revenge on the woman. and to do so he would use there child ( for whom she still cared for). So he Goes to kidnap her and gives the woman an ultimatum.
I have tried to included all of the relevant pieces i was talking about before, however because it is just an opening sequence my theme of good triumphing over evil wont be seen so clearly because I'm only showing the first 2 minutes of the film.
We went to the a sound website _____ and downloaded sounds such as a door opening, footsteps and a heartbeat. the rest of the sound will be dietetic actually coming from the girl herself. Sara then came up with an idea that we should included a quote and definition within the title sequence because she had seen it in the Mentalist and it works really well.
We googled 'revenge quotes' and then found ' Life being what it is, one dreams of Revenge' by Paul Gauguin and 'As she has planted, so does she harvest; such is the field of karma' Sri Guru Granth Sahib. We found a website that have different fonts www.dafonts.com. Because it is a thriller we want the font to be edgy This website specialises in different kinds of fonts for different themes. It s easy to use and free.  We then told our cast the kid of clothes they should wear, because we wanted a shot of the killers feet we wanted the shoe wear to be exact, so that it makes and impact on the audience. Our girl actress didn't need anything in particular to wear just something that she didn't mind getting dirty because of the blood. When I was looking at saw title sequences I saw that they were produced by Lionsgate / Twisted Pictures, our film do fall into that category so we have decided to use that same company at the beginning of our title sequence.

Now that we have now chosen our storyline and myself and Sara went to Camden to purchase the items. We brought:
 - A Black mask
 - Masking Tape
 - A White Jumpsuit
 - Rope
 - Fake Blood
 - A Wig
Some of the other items we have ourselves like a torch, wet wipes (to clean out actors with after we have finished the scene) ____. Some items we were unable to get like gloves for the pycotic man to wear. There were some minor set backs with the props we are unable to get hold of a chair and we brought the jumpsuit in the wrong size. We originally wanted the killer to wear black army boots however our actor didn't have any and we are unable to purchase, so instead we opted for black air forces.

When it came to the script 90% of our title sequence is mainly sounds i.e. sobbing, deep breathing, panting, footsteps, doors opening, fists clenching and a heart-beating. Many of which we have downloaded whilst the others will be included while we film.

Our original plan was to film on Tuesday 8th March 2011 however all of the cameras that our college provided us with were unavailable. The was a major inconvenience for my group because we all had other commitments that week. However we rescheduled a couple of things and we were able to settle on Thursday 10th March 2011. However our actor : Gbenga has to be done by 5:30pm at the latest so we will have to be quick and precise. Also our actress Monet needs to go home and change her clothes because they are inappropriate.

We will all leave our lessons at 3:30pm and leave straight away where we will film Gbenga's scenes first  and when Monet arrives we will do her scenes next. We don't have any scenes where they are both shown at the same time so it still works out.

It is now Tuesday 15th March and we are still yet to start filming properly. Over the weekend my group and I went to our location to start filming however we were unable to film all of the scenes due to the fact that we aren't actually allowed on the location due to health and safety. So the parks security guards had to escort us out. We were very fortunate and we able to have started filming and the scenes that we managed to get are good. So now we just have to move on from there.

Today is Thursday17th March. We took out the camera and sound equipment and went to the screening room in our college and we tried to film some scence that included  the sociopath. However the room was too light. So we turned off the lights and use the drama lights and put a cloth to give the lighting an effect, but then it was too dark without the light and too bright with the lights. So we put the camera on night mode, which seemed like a smart idea at the time, but when we uploaded the film footage unto the computer the whole footage was fuzzy and very hard to see clearly. We decdied as a group that we would scrap the whole footage and use the one we filmed in Abeny Park.

I Have just found out that the computer that all of our work was saved on has died. Our school technician says that they are sending it to the apple repair office and that it can be fixed but it will take some time...

Today is 30th March and our computer has been returned with all of work restored. Time is now against us, so we had aldready started editing the footage we have.
Its now April 4th and we have finsh editing the whole sequecne including title names, music and effects.  So now we need to complete our evaulation, we hve workshops during teh half-term that we can go to complete our work.
